Retrograde Planets

What retrograde means
Seen from the Earth, planets sometimes appear to slow down, stop and move backwards for a while. This is called retrograde motion (vakri). It is an effect of viewing from a moving Earth; the planets do not really reverse.
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can be retrograde. The Sun and Moon never are. Rahu and Ketu always move backwards, so they are not counted as "retrograde" in the usual sense.
Retrograde planets in the birth chart
A retrograde planet is close to the Earth and bright, so the classical view treats it as strong, though its results may come in an unusual way or after a review. People often revisit the matters of that planet — studies taken up again, a career changed and then resumed, an old skill brought back.
- A retrograde Jupiter may give wisdom that comes from reflection.
- A retrograde Saturn may give a strong sense of duty and delayed but solid results.
- A retrograde Mercury may give a mind that rethinks and rechecks.
Retrograde transits
When a slow planet goes retrograde in transit, it often brings back a matter that seemed settled. Plans may need a second look. This is a time to review, repair and finish, rather than a time of failure.
Keep the whole chart in view
Retrogression is one factor among many. Read the planet's sign, house, lordship and aspects first, and use retrogression to understand the style of its results.
A worked example
Saturn is retrograde in the 10th house of a birth chart. The person may change career direction once or twice before settling, or return to an earlier field later in life. Responsibilities at work may feel heavy early but lead to lasting results after the age of about 36, when Saturn's lessons mature.
Retrograde lords of houses
When the lord of a house is retrograde, the matters of that house may come with a second chance. A retrograde 7th lord, for example, is sometimes linked with renewing a relationship with someone from the past, or with a marriage that takes time to settle. As always, this is one indication among many.
How long planets stay retrograde
- Mercury — about three weeks, three or four times a year.
- Venus — about six weeks, once every year and a half.
- Mars — about two to two and a half months, once every two years or so.
- Jupiter — about four months each year.
- Saturn — about four and a half months each year.
Common mistakes
- Calling every retrograde planet weak. The classical view gives it strength (cheshta bala).
- Fearing Mercury retrograde. It is a common, short phase; it asks for careful checking of documents and messages, not panic.
Frequently asked questions
Is a retrograde planet in the birth chart bad? Not by itself. It describes a style of results — reflective, repeated or delayed — rather than good or bad.
Should I avoid starting things during retrograde transits? For important beginnings, many astrologers prefer the main planet involved to be direct. For everyday life it is not necessary.
Key points to remember
- Retrograde motion is apparent, seen from the moving Earth.
- In the birth chart, a retrograde planet is strong but acts in a reflective or repeated way.
- Retrograde transits are times to review and complete.
- Read retrogression together with sign, house, lordship and aspects.
