Combustion (Asta): Planets Close To The Sun

Guides › Techniques · Updated 31 Oct 2026

When a planet comes too close to the Sun, it is hidden in the Sun's glare. Astrologers call this combustion (asta). A combust planet is thought to lose some of its independent strength, as if its own voice is drowned by the Sun.

Approximate limits

The classical limits differ slightly by source. Commonly used values are:

  • Moon — within about 12°
  • Mars — about 17°
  • Mercury — about 14° (12° when retrograde)
  • Jupiter — about 11°
  • Venus — about 10° (8° when retrograde)
  • Saturn — about 15°

Rahu and Ketu are not counted as combust.

How it shows in life

A combust planet's matters may be overshadowed by authority, by the father, or by the person's own ego and need for recognition. For example, a combust Mercury may show a sharp mind that is not always heard; a combust Venus may need care in relationships and comforts.

Mercury is a special case

Mercury is never far from the Sun — at most about 28°. So Mercury is often combust, and many astrologers give its combustion less weight unless it is very close.

Not a verdict

Combustion is softened when the planet is in its own or exalted sign, well aspected, or strong in the Navamsa. Like every factor, it is read together with the rest of the chart.

A worked example

A chart has the Sun at 15° Leo and Mercury at 20° Leo, 5° apart. Mercury is combust. Mercury rules the 2nd and 11th houses for a Leo ascendant (speech, savings and gains). The person may be very capable with numbers and words but may feel that their ideas are credited to others, or may find their speech coloured by pride. The Sun and Mercury together also form Budha-Aditya yoga, so intelligence is supported; combustion mainly affects how independently it shows.

Combustion and the Navamsa

If a combust planet is strong in the Navamsa, its results are often better than the main chart suggests. Read both before concluding.

Combust planets in transit

When Jupiter or Venus is combust in transit, traditional muhurta avoids marriage dates. This is why some months have no marriage dates in the calendar.

Common mistakes

  • Treating combustion as total loss. The planet still acts; its expression is overshadowed.
  • Ignoring the Sun's own nature. A combust planet takes on solar qualities — authority, pride and visibility.

Frequently asked questions

Does combustion apply to Rahu and Ketu? No.

What helps a combust planet? As per the classical texts, strengthening the planet with its mantra and charity, and balancing the Sun through humility and respect for elders.

Key points to remember

  • A planet too close to the Sun is combust and loses some independence.
  • Limits differ by planet; Mercury is often combust and is treated more gently.
  • Own or exalted sign, good aspects and Navamsa strength soften combustion.
  • Combust Jupiter or Venus in transit is avoided for marriage muhurtas.

Is a combust planet's dasha bad? Not necessarily. The period may bring recognition through authority, or require one to step out of someone else's shadow.

What is "astangata" in the Panchang? It is the period when Jupiter or Venus is too close to the Sun to be seen; marriages are not usually fixed then.
