Planetary Dignity: Exalted, Own Sign And Debilitated
Guides › Techniques · Updated 31 Oct 2026
A planet's sign tells us how comfortable it is. This is called its dignity.
The levels of dignity
From strongest to weakest:
- Exalted (uchcha) — the planet's best sign; it gives its qualities freely.
- Moolatrikona — a part of its own sign where it works like an office of its own.
- Own sign (swakshetra) — the planet is at home and steady.
- Friend's sign — comfortable and supported.
- Neutral sign — neither helped nor hindered.
- Enemy's sign — restricted, needs more effort.
- Debilitated (neecha) — the planet's weakest sign; its matters need patience and care.
Exaltation and debilitation signs
| Planet | Exalted | Debilitated |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries | Libra |
| Moon | Taurus | Scorpio |
| Mars | Capricorn | Cancer |
| Mercury | Virgo | Pisces |
| Jupiter | Cancer | Capricorn |
| Venus | Pisces | Virgo |
| Saturn | Libra | Aries |
Cancellation of debilitation
A debilitated planet can be lifted — neecha bhanga — when, for example, the lord of its sign is strong and in a kendra, or when the planet that is exalted in that sign is well placed. Some of the most successful charts have a debilitated planet whose weakness is cancelled; the person often rises after early struggle.
Strength is more than the sign
Dignity is only one measure. House position, aspects, combustion, the Navamsa and the numerical strength called Shadbala all add to the picture. TRAC's strength tables show these together.
Moolatrikona signs
| Planet | Moolatrikona sign | Degrees |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo | 0°–20° |
| Moon | Taurus | 4°–30° |
| Mars | Aries | 0°–12° |
| Mercury | Virgo | 16°–20° |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius | 0°–10° |
| Venus | Libra | 0°–15° |
| Saturn | Aquarius | 0°–20° |
A worked example
Mars in Cancer is debilitated. In a chart with a Leo ascendant, Mars rules the 4th and 9th houses and is the yogakaraka. Its debilitation in the 12th house suggests delays in property or support from the father. But if the Moon (Cancer's lord) is strong in a kendra, the debilitation is cancelled (neecha bhanga). The person may face early obstacles and then gain property or fortune through steady effort, often away from the birthplace (12th house).
Temporary friendships
Besides natural friendships, planets become temporary friends when placed in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th houses from each other. Natural and temporary relations combine into five levels — great friend, friend, neutral, enemy and great enemy — which are used in strength calculations and in the gemstone checks.
Common mistakes
- Reading debilitation as failure. It often means effort and maturity are needed.
- Forgetting the dispositor. The lord of a planet's sign shows whether it is welcomed.
Frequently asked questions
Is an exalted planet always good? It is strong, but if it rules difficult houses for the ascendant, its strength may also amplify those difficulties.
What is Shadbala? A six-part numerical strength of each planet (position, direction, time, motion, nature and aspects). TRAC shows it on the strength tab.
Key points to remember
- Exaltation, moolatrikona and own sign are strong; debilitation is weak.
- Neecha bhanga can lift a debilitated planet, often after early struggle.
- Natural and temporary friendships combine into five levels.
- Dignity is one part of strength; Shadbala and the Navamsa complete it.
