Vimshottari Dasha: The Timing System

Guides › Techniques · Updated 31 Oct 2026

The Vimshottari dasha is the main timing system of Vedic astrology. It divides a life of 120 years into periods ruled by the nine planets in a fixed order.

The periods and their lengths

PlanetYears
Ketu7
Venus20
Sun6
Moon10
Mars7
Rahu18
Jupiter16
Saturn19
Mercury17

The first period of life is ruled by the lord of the Moon's birth nakshatra, and the part already used up depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra at birth.

Major and sub-periods

Each major period (mahadasha) is divided into sub-periods (antardashas) of all nine planets in the same order, and each sub-period again into smaller parts (pratyantardashas). A reading usually names the major and sub-period together, such as "Jupiter–Saturn".

How to read a period

A planet's period brings to the front the houses it rules, the house it sits in, and the planets it is joined with or aspected by. For example, for a Libra ascendant, Saturn rules the 4th and 5th houses, so its period often brings matters of home, studies and children to the front.

The sub-period lord shows which part of that promise comes up now. Results are strongest when the major and sub-period lords are friendly and linked to the same houses.

Dasha and transit together

The dasha shows what is due; transits show when it is triggered. An event is most likely when the running dasha supports it and the slow planets, Jupiter and Saturn, also touch the relevant houses.

Other dasha systems

There are many others — Yogini, Chara (Jaimini), Ashtottari and more. TRAC uses Vimshottari as the main timer and checks other systems for agreement.

A worked example of calculating the balance

Suppose the Moon at birth is at 20° Taurus. Taurus 10° to 23°20' is Rohini, ruled by the Moon. The Moon has travelled 10° of Rohini's 13°20', which is three-quarters of the nakshatra. So three-quarters of the Moon's 10-year period is used up, and 2 years 6 months of the Moon dasha remain at birth. After that come Mars (7 years), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16) and so on.

Reading a period step by step

Take a Sagittarius ascendant with Venus in the 11th house (Libra). Venus rules the 6th and 11th houses for Sagittarius.

  1. Houses ruled: 6th (work, competition, debts) and 11th (gains).
  2. House placed: 11th, its own sign — gains are strongly supported.
  3. Joined or aspected by: say Jupiter aspects it from the 3rd house — the gains come in a principled way.

During the Venus period the person may see rising income, gains through work or competition, and a larger social circle. The sub-periods add detail: Venus–Saturn may bring gains through steady effort; Venus–Rahu may bring gains through foreign or new fields.

Dasha sandhi

The junction between two major periods, called dasha sandhi, often brings change — a new direction, a move or a shift in priorities. The last months of one period and the first of the next are watched closely.

Common mistakes

  • Judging a period only by the planet's nature. "Saturn dasha is bad" is a myth; for many ascendants it is excellent.
  • Ignoring the sub-period. A strong major period with a weak sub-period lord can feel uneven.
  • Using the wrong birth time. The dasha balance depends on the Moon's exact degree; a large time error shifts all the dates.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dasha differ between two websites? Different ayanamsas or year lengths (365.25 days or 360 days) shift the dates by weeks or months. TRAC shows the setting it uses.

Can two dasha systems be used together? Yes. When Vimshottari and another system, such as Chara or Yogini, agree on a period, confidence rises.
