Rahu And Ketu: The Lunar Nodes
Guides › Techniques · Updated 31 Oct 2026
Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets. They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path — the north node (Rahu) and the south node (Ketu). Eclipses happen near them, which is why they have always been treated as powerful.
They always move together
Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other and move backwards through the zodiac, spending about eighteen months in each sign. So if Rahu is in your 1st house, Ketu is in your 7th; the axis of those two houses becomes a theme of life.
What they signify
- Rahu — desire, ambition, the new and unfamiliar, foreign lands, technology, sudden rise and restlessness.
- Ketu — detachment, research, intuition, spirituality, old skills and sudden letting go.
Both act like the planet whose sign they occupy and like the planets they join. A Rahu joined with a strong Jupiter behaves very differently from one joined with a weak Moon.
Rahu and Ketu periods
Rahu's dasha lasts eighteen years and Ketu's seven. Rahu's period often brings ambition, change and contact with foreign places or new fields; Ketu's period often turns the mind inward and brings a need to simplify. Neither is good or bad in itself — the houses involved decide.
Kaal Sarp, briefly
When all the planets fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, some astrologers call it Kaal Sarp yoga. Opinions on it differ widely, and it should never be read alone or used to frighten anyone. Many successful people have it.
Rahu and Ketu in the houses (tendencies)
- 1st / 7th axis — focus on self and partnership; unusual or cross-cultural relationships.
- 2nd / 8th axis — matters of family wealth, speech, inheritance and sudden changes.
- 3rd / 9th axis — courage and initiative against beliefs, teachers and long journeys.
- 4th / 10th axis — home and inner peace against career and public role.
- 5th / 11th axis — creativity, children and learning against gains and networks.
- 6th / 12th axis — work, service and health against expenses, foreign lands and spiritual life.
Rahu tends to expand the house it occupies; Ketu tends to detach from it. Rahu in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th houses is traditionally considered helpful.
A worked example
Rahu in the 10th house in Gemini, with Mercury (Gemini's lord) strong in the 11th. The person may rise in technology, media or a foreign company. During Rahu's dasha, career growth can be fast — sometimes through an unexpected opportunity. Ketu in the 4th house may make the person live away from the place of birth or feel less attached to the family home.
The nodal return
Rahu and Ketu come back to their birth positions about every 18.6 years — near ages 18–19, 37, 56 and 74. These ages often bring shifts in direction or priorities.
Common mistakes
- Fearing every Rahu period. Many successful careers grow in Rahu dasha.
- Ignoring the sign lord. Rahu in a sign behaves much like that sign's lord, coloured by Rahu's restlessness.
Frequently asked questions
Are Rahu and Ketu always malefic? By nature they are disruptive, but their results depend on their house, sign lord and associations.
What remedies are traditional for Rahu and Ketu? As per the classical texts, Durga worship for Rahu and Ganesha worship for Ketu, with charity and steady routines.
