Transits (Gochar) And How They Work
Guides › Techniques · Updated 31 Oct 2026
Transits, called gochar, are the planets' current positions, moving over the fixed birth chart. They show how the sky of today meets the promise of your chart.
Speed matters
- The Moon changes sign every two and a half days — it colours a mood or a single day.
- The Sun, Mercury and Venus take about a month per sign — they mark short phases.
- Mars takes about a month and a half per sign.
- Jupiter spends about a year in a sign — it marks growth and opportunity.
- Saturn spends about two and a half years in a sign — it marks responsibility, pressure and long-term building.
- Rahu and Ketu spend about eighteen months in a sign, moving backwards.
The slow planets carry the most weight in timing life events.
From where to count
Transits are read from the Moon sign (the traditional gochar rules) and from the ascendant. A transit that is good from both is especially reliable.
The double transit
Many astrologers watch for the double transit: when Jupiter and Saturn both touch (by position or aspect) the same house or its lord. Major events of that house — marriage for the 7th, a new job for the 10th, a home for the 4th — are often seen around such a time, provided the dasha also supports it.
Transits do not act alone
A good transit in a weak dasha may bring only a small opening; a hard transit in a strong dasha may bring effort but still success. Always read transits on top of the dasha, not on their own.
The traditional transit results from the Moon
The classical rules say each planet gives good results from certain houses counted from the Moon:
| Planet | Good from the Moon in houses |
|---|---|
| Sun | 3, 6, 10, 11 |
| Moon | 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11 |
| Mars | 3, 6, 11 |
| Mercury | 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11 |
| Jupiter | 2, 5, 7, 9, 11 |
| Venus | 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12 |
| Saturn | 3, 6, 11 |
| Rahu / Ketu | 3, 6, 11 |
There is also a rule of vedha (obstruction): a good transit can be blocked when another planet is in a particular house at the same time. Ashtakavarga scores refine this further.
A worked example
A person with the Moon in Gemini sees Jupiter enter Leo — the 3rd from the Moon. By the table, the 3rd is not one of Jupiter's good houses, so the year may need more effort. But Jupiter in Leo aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself — Sagittarius, Aquarius and Aries. Sagittarius is the 7th from the Moon (partnership) and Aries the 11th from the Moon (gains), so those areas still get support. The transit is mixed, and the dasha will decide which side shows more.
Common mistakes
- Reading every Moon transit. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days; its transit only colours short moods and days.
- Ignoring the birth chart's own promise. A transit cannot give what the chart does not show.
- Panicking over retrograde periods. Retrograde planets in transit ask for review, not fear.
Frequently asked questions
Should I count transits from the ascendant or the Moon? Both. The Moon shows how you feel the period; the ascendant shows which events happen.
Which transits matter most? Saturn and Jupiter, then Rahu and Ketu. The faster planets help with fine timing.
