Rahu Kaal

Rahu Kaal is a period of about an hour and a half each day that is traditionally avoided for starting new work. It is found by dividing the time from sunrise to sunset into eight equal parts; one part, fixed by the weekday, is Rahu Kaal:

  • Monday — the 2nd part
  • Tuesday — the 7th part
  • Wednesday — the 5th part
  • Thursday — the 6th part
  • Friday — the 4th part
  • Saturday — the 3rd part
  • Sunday — the 8th part

Because it depends on sunrise and sunset, Rahu Kaal is different for every city and every season.

Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal

Two similar periods, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal, are found the same way with different parts for each weekday. Yamaganda is avoided like Rahu Kaal; Gulika Kaal is avoided for some events but considered favourable for repeating actions.

Choghadiya

Choghadiya divides the day and the night each into eight parts, each named Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Rog, Kaal or Udveg. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are good for most work; Char is good for travel; Rog, Kaal and Udveg are avoided for important beginnings. It is widely used in western India for quick choice of a good time.

Use with common sense

These periods help choose a better time when you have a choice. They are not reasons to panic if something has to be done during Rahu Kaal. For major events, a full muhurta is better.

A worked example of Rahu Kaal

On a Monday, sunrise is at 6:00 a.m. and sunset at 6:00 p.m. — 12 hours of daylight. One-eighth of that is 1 hour 30 minutes. Monday's Rahu Kaal is the 2nd part, so it runs from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. In winter, with a 10-hour day (sunrise 7:00, sunset 5:00), each part is 1 hour 15 minutes, and Monday's Rahu Kaal is 8:15 to 9:30 a.m.

Choghadiya names and their nature

ChoghadiyaNatureGood for
AmritVery goodAll good work
ShubhGoodCeremonies, marriage
LabhGoodBusiness, trade
CharNeutralTravel
UdvegAvoidGovernment work only by some traditions
RogAvoidDisputes and illness
KaalAvoidConsidered unfavourable for beginnings

The order of choghadiyas changes with the weekday, and day and night have different orders.

Abhijit muhurta

The Abhijit muhurta is the eighth of the fifteen muhurtas of the day, around local noon. It is considered powerful for beginnings and is often used when no other good time is available — though many traditions avoid it on Wednesdays.

Common mistakes

  • Using fixed clock times. Rahu Kaal changes daily with sunrise and sunset.
  • Over-using these periods. They are for choosing among practical options, not for stopping daily life.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rahu Kaal applicable at night? The common rule is for daytime only.

Can I travel during Rahu Kaal? Many people avoid starting a journey then if they can; if not, they simply proceed with care.

Key points to remember

  • Rahu Kaal is one-eighth of the daytime, fixed by the weekday, and changes daily.
  • Yamaganda is also avoided; Gulika Kaal is avoided for some events.
  • Choghadiya gives quick good and bad periods for day and night.
  • Use these to choose among practical options; for major events, use a full muhurta.
