Numerology studies the numbers in your date of birth and your name. In Indian numerology the numbers 1 to 9 are linked with the nine planets.
Root or psychic number
Add the digits of your day of birth until one digit remains. Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5. This number describes your basic nature and how others see you.
Destiny or life-path number
Add all the digits of the full date of birth. For 14-08-1994: 1+4+0+8+1+9+9+4 = 36, and 3+6 = 9. This number describes the direction of life and its lessons.
Name number
Each letter is given a number (the Chaldean system is common in India), and the total of the name is reduced to one digit. Many people adjust the spelling of their name so that its number is friendly with their birth numbers.
The numbers and their planets
1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars.
How to use it
Numerology is simple and quick, and it works well as a companion to the birth chart. Read the numbers as tendencies, and avoid changing an established name without good reason. TRAC's Numerology page calculates all three numbers and explains them.
The Chaldean letter values
| Number | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, I, J, Q, Y |
| 2 | B, K, R |
| 3 | C, G, L, S |
| 4 | D, M, T |
| 5 | E, H, N, X |
| 6 | U, V, W |
| 7 | O, Z |
| 8 | F, P |
There is no 9 in the Chaldean letter table; 9 is considered sacred.
A worked example
Name: RAVI. R = 2, A = 1, V = 6, I = 1. Total = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1. The name number 1 (Sun) suggests leadership and independence. If the person's root number is 1 or 3 (friendly with the Sun), the name is considered harmonious; if it is 8 (Saturn), some numerologists suggest a small spelling change.
Compound numbers
Before reducing to one digit, the two-digit total (10 to 52) is called the compound number. Each has a traditional meaning; for example, 10 is linked with rise and fall of fortune, and 23 with success and help from others.
Common mistakes
- Changing a name only for numerology. Official documents, habits and identity matter too.
- Ignoring the birth chart. Numbers are a companion to the chart, not a replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use my full name or my common name? The name you use most in daily life, along with your full name for official matters.
Which is more important, root or destiny number? The root number shows nature; the destiny number shows the path. Both are read together.
Personal year number
Add the digits of your birth day and month to the digits of the current year, and reduce to one digit. For example, born on 14 August, in 2026: 1+4+0+8+2+0+2+6 = 23 → 5. A personal year 5 suggests change, travel and new contacts. Each year from 1 to 9 has its own theme, and the cycle repeats.
Key points to remember
- Root number from the birth day; destiny number from the full date; name number from the letters.
- Numbers 1–9 are linked with the nine planets.
- A personal year number gives the theme of each year.
- Use numerology alongside the birth chart, and change a name only with good reason.
