The Ascendant (Lagna) And Why Birth Time Matters
Guides › Basics · Updated 31 Oct 2026
The ascendant, or lagna, is the sign and degree rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It becomes the first house of the chart, and every other house is counted from it.
Why it changes so quickly
Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs rise in about 24 hours — on average a new sign every two hours. The degree of the ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. That is why two children born in the same hospital on the same day can have very different charts.
What the ascendant shows
- the body and general health;
- temperament, outlook and the first impression one makes;
- the direction life takes and how one meets its events.
The lord of the ascendant is the most personal planet in the chart. When it is strong and well placed, the person usually has resilience and a clear sense of direction.
How to check a doubtful birth time
If the birth time is uncertain, a few checks can help:
- Compare the ascendant's description with the person's build and nature.
- Look at major past events — marriage, children, moves, job changes — and see whether the dasha periods and transits fit them.
- Look at the divisional charts, which change faster than the main chart; they are the first to go wrong with a wrong time.
Correcting a birth time from events is called birth time rectification. It needs several well-dated events and should be done carefully.
Ascendant, Moon and Sun
Many astrologers read a chart three ways: from the ascendant (the body and events), from the Moon (the mind and feelings) and from the Sun (the soul and authority). When all three agree, the result is strongly shown.
The ascendant in each sign, briefly
- Aries — energetic and direct; Mars is the key planet.
- Taurus — steady and pleasure-loving; Saturn is very helpful.
- Gemini — curious and communicative; Venus often helps.
- Cancer — caring and emotional; Mars can bring success.
- Leo — proud and generous; Mars is a strong supporter.
- Virgo — careful and practical; Venus can bring fortune.
- Libra — balanced and social; Saturn is the best planet.
- Scorpio — intense and private; the Moon and Jupiter support fortune.
- Sagittarius — principled and outgoing; the Sun and Mars help.
- Capricorn — disciplined and ambitious; Venus is the yogakaraka.
- Aquarius — independent and thoughtful; Venus is the yogakaraka.
- Pisces — gentle and intuitive; the Moon and Mars support.
A yogakaraka is a planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona for that ascendant, and so gives especially good results.
Rising time differs by sign and latitude
Not every sign takes two hours to rise. At Indian latitudes, signs such as Pisces and Aries rise quickly (about 1.5 hours or less), while Leo and Virgo take longer (over 2 hours). The further north you go, the larger this difference. So the time window for each ascendant is not equal.
A worked example
A child is born at 6:10 a.m. in a city where the ascendant changes from Leo to Virgo at 6:18 a.m. The chart shows a Leo ascendant at 28°. If the recorded time is even ten minutes early, the true ascendant may be Virgo. In such a case an astrologer checks major life events against both possibilities before deciding which chart to use.
Common mistakes
- Trusting a rounded time. "Around 6 a.m." may be off by 20–30 minutes.
- Using the hospital discharge time or the time registered later. The time of the first cry or birth is what matters.
- Changing the birth time to get a "better" chart. Rectification should follow events, not preferences.
Frequently asked questions
My birth time is unknown. Can I still use astrology? Yes — through the Moon chart, transits over the Moon, Nadi methods that rely less on the ascendant, or a Prashna (question) chart.
Does the ascendant change over life? No. The birth ascendant is fixed. Annual charts and progressions add a layer, but the birth chart remains the base.
